The students will be able, at the end of the course, to know the classes of nanomaterials and biomaterials and their main properties. They should also be able to evaluate the applicability of a peculiar material in a specific chemical and biological field, considering the material properties.
Prerequisiti
Students are expected to have basic inorganic chemistry and physical chemistry notions
Metodi didattici
The course is based on frontal lessons without tutoring. A minimum of frequency is not required.
Verifica Apprendimento
The assessment of skills is represented by oral examination. For each individual module, the student will prepare a presentation based on a scientific paper agreed with the Lecturer and related to nano materials (Module I) or to biomaterials (Module II). The questions will cover the content of the presentation and general concepts from the course. The final mark will be the weighted average of marks obtained in the two modules
Testi
There is not a standard textbook. A copy of the material shown during the lessons will be made available to students
Contenuti
Module I (3CFU) - Nanomaterials. After an introduction on the properties of (inorganic) matter at the nanoscale and their changes as a function of the size of the NPs (solubility, melting point, redox potentials, light absorption/emission), some basic concepts will be introduced on DLVO theory, agglomeration, aggregation and stabilization of NPs by the electrostatic and steric effect. The course will then focus on the synthesis and properties of inorganic NPs of specific substances (either elements or compounds). For each substance an overview of its literature applications in nanomedicine will be given, followed by all the examples (if any) of authorized products or products in clinical trial. The reviewed substances will include metals, metal oxides, and coordination complexes.
Module II (3 CFU) - Biomaterials. Introduction to Solid Materials - Crystallography and Microstructure (crystal systems, defects, and grain boundaries) -Hints to properties of Materials - Introduction to Biomaterials (Polymers, Metals, Ceramics, Composites, Resorbable materials) – Methods for surface modifications to improve biocompatibility (Plasma, Langmuir Blodget, Silanization..)
