Obiettivi Formativi

The aim of the course is to provide students with knowledge and competences in the field of innovative pharmaceutical dosage forms, with particular emphasis on formulation design, development strategies, and technological approaches for advanced drug delivery systems. The course introduces the main principles underlying the development of conventional and innovative delivery platforms, including their formulation aspects, physicochemical characterization, and biopharmaceutical relevance.
A specific part of the course is dedicated to advanced dosage forms and controlled drug delivery systems, with particular focus on novel formulation strategies for small molecules, macromolecules, and biologically active compounds. The course also provides an introduction to nanomedicine, covering the design, preparation, characterization, and biomedical applications of nanoscale drug delivery systems. The course includes a group-based activity aimed at developing students’ ability to critically analyze and present scientific literature related to the main topics of the course. Students will work in groups to select, evaluate, and discuss recent research articles focused on innovative dosage forms, drug delivery systems, and nanomedicine approaches.

Prerequisiti

Students should have a basic background in organic chemistry and analytical chemistry, together with preliminary knowledge of pharmaceutical formulation principles, including the design and development of conventional dosage forms.

Metodi didattici

The teaching activities include frontal lectures, interactive discussions, and innovative teaching approaches based on active learning methodologies. Students will be involved in group-based activities focused on the critical analysis, discussion, and presentation of scientific literature related to the main topics of the course, promoting collaborative learning and the development of scientific communication skills.
Lectures are supported by PowerPoint presentations, multimedia resources, and additional teaching materials, which are made available to students through the dedicated teaching section on the Moodle KIRO platform. Interactive sessions, case studies, and literature-based activities are used to encourage students’ active participation and the application of theoretical concepts to innovative pharmaceutical technologies and nanomedicine.
Lessons (classroom hours/year): 20
Group activities and exercises (classroom hours/year): 4

Verifica Apprendimento

The assessment aims to evaluate students’ knowledge and competences regarding the formulation strategies, technological approaches, and biopharmaceutical aspects of innovative dosage forms and nanomedicine-based systems discussed during the course.
Students’ learning is assessed through a computer-based written test performed on the Moodle KIRO Testing platform in the classroom using their own laptops. The examination consists of multiple-choice questions and other open questions designed to evaluate both theoretical knowledge and the ability to understand and apply concepts related to innovative pharmaceutical technologies, advanced drug delivery systems, and nanomedicine.
The final evaluation also includes the contribution of the group-based scientific literature activity, which contributes to the final grade with a score ranging from 1 to 3 points, assigned to the group as a whole.

Contenuti

The course covers the fundamental principles of innovative pharmaceutical dosage forms, including formulation strategies, technological approaches, and biopharmaceutical aspects related to advanced drug delivery systems. Particular attention is given to the design and development of controlled and targeted delivery platforms, biomacromolecule-based formulations, and innovative systems for the administration of small molecules and biologically active compounds.
The course explores innovative formulation approaches for different routes of administration, including oral, ocular, dermal/transdermal, nasal and nose-to-brain, vaginal, rectal, and pulmonary delivery systems. For each administration route, the main technological challenges, formulation strategies, and emerging solutions are discussed, including advanced dosage forms designed to improve drug stability, bioavailability, targeting, and therapeutic efficacy. Specific examples include innovative oral delivery systems, ocular drug delivery platforms, nanostructured and biomaterial-based systems for skin applications, intranasal formulations for central nervous system targeting, vaginal and rectal delivery platforms, and inhalable formulations for pulmonary administration.
A dedicated section of the course is focused on the formulation and delivery of macromolecules and advanced therapeutics, with particular emphasis on protein-based drugs, their stability issues, and technological strategies for improving their delivery.
The course provides an introduction to nanomedicine, addressing the design, preparation, characterization, and biomedical applications of nanoscale drug delivery systems, including nanocarriers for controlled, targeted, and stimuli-responsive drug delivery.
