The growth of higher education institutions in Catholic countries after the Counter Reformation, and the role of Jesuits in particular. It was during that period, in particular, that Pavia enriched his system of university colleges for poor students by adding two important institutions that survived, i.e. the Borromeo and Ghislieri colleges.
