Abstract:
The archaeological investigations undertaken in Rome during the construction works
for the C-line of the underground on the Caelian Hill (2014-2016) revealed a wall dating
back to the Imperial Age in opus mixtum, whose western façade faces the vicus
Capitis Africae, a road that ran north-south across the northern slope of the hill. In the
southern section of the façade, a tablet with an ithyphallic representation and a graffito
was found in correspondence with a masonry restoration. The apotropaic phallus
is represented as a bird. The graffito carved on the tablet contains a homophobic slur
against a certain Epaprha.
