Abstract:
A mol. sensor for a specific analyte was obtained by covalently linking the appropriate receptor to a photoactive fragment (the fluorophore). The receptor/analyte interaction can drastically modify (quench/reactivate) the fluorescence emission of the proximate fluorophore. Fluorescence is an efficient sensor parameter that detected visually and through instrumentation even at low concn. levels and can be controlled through well defined mechanisms (e.g. electron transfer). Design of fluorescent sensors for s and d block metal ions, inorg. anions, and amino acids is discussed. The same synthetic approach can be used to fabricate a fluorescent mol. thermometer.
