Syllabus

Obiettivi Formativi

The course aims to make students aquainted with competition policy analysis and market regulation topics. Given the wider resort to examples concerning many industries the student is expected to learn the competitive dynamics of industries and to learn what strategic behavior means. After attending the course and passed the exams, the student will be able to understand and discuss competition policy cases and carry out business analysis in any industrial sector.

Prerequisiti

Undergraduate Microeconomics, some specific knowledge of Industrial Organization at an undergraduate level is also very helpful. A short course of basic microeconomics is provided to students during the month of septmeber, before the start of the first semester. Basic concepts concerning non cooperative game theory and duopoly are reviewed at the start of the course.

Metodi didattici

The course is partly based on traditional lectures for each topic listed in the syllabus. For most topics some excercises are solved in class by the lecturer. From the methological point of view, the analisys of real competition policy cases is an essential contribution of the course. On one side, for most topics a competition policy case is presented in class by a professional who is also an instructor of the course. Cases are selected on the web page of the European Commission (Competition policy section). Furthermore, each student or student group is expected to present a competition policy case in class, at the end of the course. Students build their presentation with the help of the instructors who can be consulted to solve students doubts and answer students questions.

Verifica Apprendimento

We test students learning in two ways. Firstly, each student is assigned a competition policy case. At the end of the course, students are required to present the case in class. The evaluation of the presentation counts for 40% of the final grade. Secondly, a written exam takes place during the exam session. The written exam counts for 60% of the final grade. To pass the exam, students need to obtain a grade of at least 18/30 both for what concerns the presentation in class and the written exam.
