Knowledge and Understanding 1. Describe the mechanisms of action, principal clinical indications, adverse effects, and pharmacological properties of the major classes of antibacterial, antiviral, and anticancer drugs. 2. Explain the mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance and the principles of rational antimicrobial use. Applying Knowledge and Understanding 3. Apply pharmacological knowledge to the selection and appropriate use of chemotherapeutic agents in common clinical scenarios.

Metodi didattici
Teaching methods include lectures, discussion of clinical cases, and guided independent study. Lectures provide the fundamental knowledge required to understand the pharmacology of antibacterial, antiviral, and anticancer drugs, including their mechanisms of action, therapeutic indications, adverse effects, and resistance mechanisms (supports LO1–LO2). Discussion of clinical cases supports the application of pharmacological principles to the selection and rational use of chemotherapeutic agents in common clinical scenarios, including consideration of efficacy, safety, and antimicrobial stewardship principles (supports LO3). Guided independent study, recommended readings, and additional learning resources support the consolidation of knowledge and the development of independent learning skills across all areas of the module (supports LO1–LO3).

Contenuti
The module introduces the principles of chemotherapy and the pharmacology of antibacterial, antiviral, and anticancer drugs. Students will examine the mechanisms of action, pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties, therapeutic indications, adverse effects, and resistance mechanisms of the principal classes of chemotherapeutic agents. Particular emphasis is placed on the rational and evidence-based use of antimicrobial drugs and on the pharmacological basis of contemporary anticancer therapies. Topics include: Antibacterial drugs • Principles of antimicrobial therapy and antimicrobial stewardship • Mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance • β-Lactam antibiotics (penicillins, cephalosporins, carbapenems, monobactams) • Aminoglycosides • Macrolides • Glycopeptides and other agents active against resistant Gram-positive organisms (vancomycin, linezolid, daptomycin) Antiviral drugs • Principles of antiviral therapy • Drugs used in herpesvirus infections • Anti-influenza agents • Drugs used in hepatitis B and hepatitis C infections Anticancer drugs • Principles of cancer chemotherapy • Alkylating agents • Antimetabolites • Antimitotic agents • Antitumour antibiotics • Targeted therapies, including kinase inhibitors and monoclonal antibodies
