Syllabus

Course Objectives

The student will learn the mechanics of masonry materials and systems, so that he/she will be capable of carrying out the structural design of buildings made of unreinforced or reinforced masonry, including the case of seismic actions. The student will be also provided with the fundamental notions needed for the assessment and retrofit/rehabilitation of existing unreinforced masonry buildings, with special regard to those subjected to seismic hazard.

Course Prerequisites

Basic undergraduate courses in structural mechanics, structural engineering, and reinforced concrete structures.

Teaching Methods

The course consists of lectures taught with the aid of Powerpoint slides and blackboard. Numerical examples of selected problems or design tasks are carried out in class. The students are required also to carry out a home project consisting of the design of a masonry building subjected to gravity and environmental loads, including earthquake.

Assessment Methods

The grading is based on an oral exam of approximately one hour, during which the home project is discussed and questions on the course programme are asked. The home project must be handed in two days before the date of the oral exam.

Contents

Part one

Properties of masonry materials. Modern masonry typologies.. Mechanics of masonry in compression: failure theories, compressive strength, elastic modulus. Behaviour of masonry under complex stress states, inculding in-plane shear and comression. Walls subjected to lateral forces and their role in building structural systems excited by earthquake motions. Unreinforced masonry walls: vertical and transverse loadings, failure mechanisms, capacity models. Building systems: analysis under vertical and under horizontal loadings. Linear vs. nonlinear analysis. Reinforced masonry walls: behaviour, design, detailing of reinforcement.

Part two

Introduction to seismic engineering and structural dynamics of linear systems. Response spectra. Procedures for seismic design of structures. Seismic design of unreinforced and reinforced masonry buildings.

Part three

Introduction to historical masonry types and to the main architectural/structural components of existing masonry buildings. Statics of the masonry arch; masonry vaults and domes. Survey, in-situ investigations and condition assessment. Possible causes of structural damage. Local damage/collapse mechanisms. Analysis through rigid body kinematics. Seismic assessment of existing masonry buildings. Strengthening and rehabilitation strategies and techniques.
