Understand the value of intellectual activity in a globalized society. Understand how to protect. intellectual property and how to be able to communicate and disseminate it without reducing its potential. At the end of the course the student must be able to judge whether the result of his research is patentable and which procedures to follow in order to be able to fully develop its potential also through technology transfer up to an industrial level.
Course Prerequisites
No particular prerequisites are required other than a basic knowledge of the chemical-pharmaceutical-technological sector
Teaching Methods
The lectures will be supplemented by practical examples of pharmaceutical patents and by the analysis of particularly significant case studies. Students will be invited to carry out group research on current topics elaborated and discussed in the classroom.
Assessment Methods
Final written exam on a proposed topic. The exam aims to verify the learning of the skills necessary to manage the protection of intellectual property. The following are therefore required: ability to understand the proposed question, maturity of reasoning, connection, elaboration of meanings, flexibility in dealing with different topics and ability to communicate the contents.

Introduction on the awareness, valorisation and protection of intellectual property in the modern globalized society. Illustration of the different types of intellectual property (IP), in particular copyrights, trademarks, but above all patents for inventions will be treated. Requirements necessary to obtain a patent. Evaluation of the limits, costs and possibilities of success in patenting in the chemical, pharmaceutical and biotechnological sectors. Bibliographic research of patent priorities and databases available on the net. Rules and timing for the drafting, filing and granting of national and international patents for new molecules, new applications of known molecules, new synthesis processes, new technologies and/or industrial production. European directive on the patenting of biological material and biotechnological processes. Extension, granting, opposition, infringement and defense of patents according to Italian, European, US and PCT (Word Intellectual Property Organization) legislation. Analysis and practical examples of some types of patents and emblematic case studies of opposition or patent infringement. Technology transfer: national and international initiatives for the promotion of innovative entrepreneurship, for the support of scientific and technological research, for the diffusion of innovative and high-tech technologies. Spin-offs and start-ups.
