Course Objectives

Give a general vision of astronomy, of the major problems it studies, of what has been understood and what remains to be understood, to cover the most current results

Course Prerequisites

Physics course 1. Rational mechanics and introduction to particle physics courses are recommended.

Astronomy from the ground and from space
The solar system: description of the Sun, planets, comets and asteroids.
Other planetary systems
Stellar evolution: observables, HR diagram, notes on nucleosynthesis, evolution of stars as a function of their mass, end of life of stars and transformation into compact objects: white dwarfs, neutron stars, black holes
Our galaxy: radio observations to trace the structure, theory of spiral structure formation, rotation curve and implications about the existence of dark matter External galaxies: classification, local group, galaxy clusters, active galaxies, quasars
Outlines of cosmology: Hubble's law, standard candles, cosmic background radiation, dark matter and dark energy

Students who ask to take the exam without having attended the lessons and without having done the written tests will have to pass a written exam which will cover the entire program before taking the oral exam.
