Course Objectives

The course aims to provide students with an overview of the sociological approach to the study of the social, cultural, and organizational context relating to the work of obstetrician, the obstetrician -patient relationship, and issues such as gender inequalities, childbirth, family roles, and the body.

Teaching Methods

Lectures with student contributions. Group work.

Assessment Methods

Written exam: production of a short essay on the topics covered.

The lecture program covers the following topics:
  Basic sociological analytical tools for understanding social facts;
  The social construction of the body and health;
  Social conditions and health (inequalities, gender, immigration);
  Social models and cultural models of the relationship between health and illness;
  The social construction of motherhood and childbirth;
  The role of the healthcare provider, the role of the obstetrician;
  The obstetrician-patient relationship in health management;
  Obstetrician-patient communication;
  Family, social networks, welfare
Group work focuses on exploring topics that may arise during lectures, such as:
  Motherhood, caregiving, and family roles;
  Motherhood and inequality;
  New social models of motherhood;
  The role of the media in the social definition of women and mothers.
