Syllabus

Course Objectives

The learning outcomes of this course will be: -) knowledge of the main development points of Greek Art, from the Archaic period to the Hellenismus. -) Ability to analyze the main Greek works of art from various points of view (stylistic, iconographical, social-historical). Particular emphasis will be placed on the development of communication skills, with the acquisition of a technical-specialist vocabulary.

Course Prerequisites

Students must be familiar with Classical mythology and basic elements of Greek History.

Teaching Methods

Lectures (30 Hours) + Seminars (12 Hours). Lectures with abundant use of slides (through the projection of various powerpoints, which will be provided to the students), with the aim of gradually developing knowledge of Greek works of art. Seminars will involve students presenting small papers on specific works of art or themes. The aim is to encourage, through direct involvement in the analysis of each work, the active participation of students and to develop their capacity for observation and criticism. Students who are recipients of the special inclusive teaching methods are asked to agree with the teacher on a personal learning path adapted to their needs.

Assessment Methods

Oral exam. Three-four questions on different periods of Greek Art. The ability to stylistically, historically and iconographically analyse the images of the texts in the bibliography and those discussed in the monographic course is required. Students benefiting from the special inclusive teaching methods are asked to agree with the lecturer on customised examination methods.

Contents

History of Greek Art from the 6th century B.C. to the Hellenistic period. The course aims at providing basic notions for the analysis of the main works of Greek art (sculpture, architecture and painting) from the 6th century BC to the 1st century BC, particular attention being paid to stylistic, iconographical issues as well as patronage. Some lectures will be specifically devoted to the portraiture from the Hellenistic period.
