Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide knowledge about the history of psychoanalysis and the main psychodynamic models of the development of human mind.
The course offers a historical survey from the origin of psychoanalytic theory to the most current perspectives that allow us to understand the evolution of dynamic psychological thought.
The historical excursus will provide an understanding of the main theories related to the development of the mind in the normative and psychopathological sense and of the functioning in the life cycle.
In addition, the contemporary debate between the classical psychodynamic model and the relational approach will be explored.

Course Prerequisites

There are no specific prerequisites.

Teaching Methods

Following the University Guidelines, the course can be attended in person. All course materials will be available on KIRO.
Apart from lectures, for every author clinical materials will be discussed. Further, historical documentaries will be presented.
During the course extra materials will be provided as mandatory study materials for the final exams.
For each CFU (25 hours) is expected
5 hours of teaching in DE delivery mode, i.e frontal teaching (content presentation via slides, scientific papers and videos)
1 hours of interactive teaching – DI, i.e. discussion on clinical cases
19 hours of self-study on the texts of the course bibliography, on the slides provided and on the scientific articles indicated

Assessment Methods

The examination will consist of a written test and an optional oral interview.
The written exam includes three open questions on the historical and monographical parts that will be scored 10 points each. The criteria for the evaluation provided are the accuracy of the answer, comprehensiveness and the capacity for argumentation and theoretical reflection.
Students can freely choose whether to take the oral exam evaluated with the same criteria as the written exam.

Contents

The course aims to foster the acquisition of knowledge related to psychodynamic theoretical models from their historical origins to more recent developments.
The program includes the study of:
- Freud's thought and the fundamental constructs of the psychoanalytic approach
-Anna Freud
- Melanie Klein
- The Ego psychology in England and the United States;
- The British 'independent' school;
- John Bowlby and the birth of attachment theory;
- Interpersonal psychiatry;
- The psychology of the self;
- The relational model in psychoanalysis (John Mitchell).
- Contemporary psychoanalysis

Monographic study on "the dream".

Basic ethical and ethical principles governing psychotherapeutic practice such as the principles of incompatibility and professional secrecy will be mentioned.
