Course Prerequisites
This course is intended for 2nd year students of the "Corso di laurea in Lingue e Culture Moderne". The knowledge of the French language at level B1 of Common European Framework is required to attend the course. In order to take the French Language 2 oral exam with the "docente" (professor Poggi), students must have passed all the "prove propedeutiche" : the French Language 2 CEL tests and professor Poggi's written exam (see below).
Teaching Methods
Lectures. Students will also be invited to participate in doing the exercices. Presentations in Powerpoint will be used, as well as other materials, which will be handed out or uploaded on the KIRO platform.
As regards Inclusive Teaching for students belonging to the categories listed on the University website: see below.

Assessment Methods
The oral exams are scheduled in June/July ( three dates), September (one date) and January/February (three dates).
Before taking the oral exam with professor Poggi, students must have passed the following "prove propedeutiche", which are a necessary pre-requisite:
- the CEL tests (Listening Comprehension and Speaking 2, to be passed at the same time; Grammar 2 and Writing 2. to be passed at the same time). The CEL tests are evaluated out of 20 (minimum threshold to pass: 12/20).
- the professor's written exam ("prova docente"). This one will consist of a reading comprehension ( B2 level, no dictionary allowed) and of some grammar exercices on the dependent clauses analysed during the course.
Both parts of a "prova propedeutica" must get a passing grade for the exam to be valid.
The results of the above preliminary exams /prove propedeutiche will be uploaded on the corresponding KIRO pages.
The students who will have attended at least 70% of the CEL lessons will have the opportunity to take two assessment tests ("épreuves partielles"/"prove parziali") during the academic year (1st: December ; 2nd: May). If passed, these CEL assessment tests will amount to the CEL final global tests ("épreuves globales"/ "prove globali") held in June, August/September, January. If students fail one of the assessment tests, they must take it again as a whole, in a global session.
The CEL tests and professor Poggi's written exam will be valid for 13 months (e.g.: the tests passed in May/June 2025 will be valid through July 2026). All these examinations must be valid simultaneously for the students to be able to participate in the final oral exam.
The oral exam will concern the linguistic variation subjects covered during the course. The final mark of the French Language 2 exam will result from the evaluation of the oral exam, held entirely in French, as well as from the global results of all preliminary tests/prove propedeutiche (CELs' and professor’s). The final mark is out of 30.
PLEASE NOTE:
1) Students are allowed to take the oral exam once they have successfully completed all the CEL tests as well as the professor's written exam (results not older than 13 months).
2) Students are allowed to take the 2nd year professor's written exam only once they have thoroughly completed the French Language 1 exam.
3) Students are not allowed to take the CEL / professor exams of French Language 2 and French Language 1 (or 3) in the same session (according to the principle of the exam order provided by the University regulations).
4) Students can take the CEL French language 2 final tests or the second assessment test (May) only if their CEL French language 1 exams have been successful.

Contents
- The course will be held in the 2nd trimester (36 hours).
Contents:
- a general survey of important variation phenomena concerning both the diachronic and the synchronic (diatopic, diastratic, diaphasic) dimensions, also illustrated by some example texts. These will be the topics of the final oral examination.
- an analysis of some dependent clauses in complex sentences (subordinate clauses of reason, result, purpose, contrast and concession).
- reading comprehension activities.
These will be the subjects of the final written exam.
The language courses ("Didattica Integrativa") offered by mother tongue teachers ( also named CEL - Collaboratori ed Esperti Linguistici) necessarily complete the course and are highly recommended. These courses begin in the 1st trimester and are meant to prepare students for the second year CEL tests: Listening Comprehension and Speaking 2, Grammar 2, Writing 2. For information, see the platform KIRO (https://elearning4.unipv.it, Centro Linguistico d'Ateneo, Francese CEL/AdL) and ask the Language Centre (https://cla.unipv.it).
