Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (22/09/2025 - 19/12/2025)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The student must have a good general knowledge of the history of art between 1610 and 1815. He must be able to describe a work of art, identify its iconography, specify its historical context, its client and destination, place it in contexts wider within the path of the author and his current. In the oral presentation, he / she will have to demonstrate the ability to synthesize and structure the speech.

Course Prerequisites

Good knowledge of the history of the period 1610-1815.

Teaching Methods

Lessons with power-point projection (available on the Kiro platform). In the power-points the bibliography for in-depth analysis of the subject is indicated. Visits to museums and monuments are planned, mainly in Lombardy.

Assessment Methods

The exam is oral. Starting from an image of the power-point or the text-book, the candidate must identify the artist, the iconography, the patron, the chronology and the location of the work. Then, the student will illustrate the formal aspects of the work, placing it in the path of its author and in the currents of time. He will indicate the sources of the artist's language, its peculiarities, the influence on subsequent production. The candidate must know how to structure the discourse and to establish links between the acquired notions, and to propose a critical synthesis of his readings.

Texts

A text-book chosen among these: S. Settis, T. Montanari, Arte. Una storia naturale e civile, voll. 3 e 4, Milano, 2019; P. De Vecchi, E. Cerchiari, Arte nel Tempo, Milano, 1999; C. Bertelli, G. Briganti, Storia dell’Arte Italiana, Milano, 1988. The editions indicated may be replaced by more recent ones, covering the period 1610-1815. Students interested in the historical-artistic path are strongly recommended to read: R. Wittkower, Art and Architecture in Italy, Penguin Books, several reprints.

Contents

History of Italian art between about 1610 and 1815. The teacher will propose monographic insights into the topics covered in the manuals. Students will learn the different methodological approaches of art history: iconography, archival research, philological-attributive analysis, study of the patronage, function of the image, etc. Particular attention will be paid to the historical evolution of the Italian regional pictorial languages.
