Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims at making students familiar with the method of textual criticism in its general features, i.e. as a way of reading a written text and of assessing the textual conditions of written records. More specific objectives are: to know the general historical outline of the transmission of ancient Greek and Latin texts; to know the history and the techniques of the textual criticism (classical scholarship); to possess the vocabulary of textual criticism; to be able to use a critical edition and to read a critical apparatus.

Teaching Methods

The course will take place on-site. In order to facilitate the active participation of the participants, the topics will mostly be presented with the support of powerpoint presentations. Didactical materials will be provided during the lessons and later uploaded on the e-learning platform Kiro (htttp://idcd.unipv.it/). Students who won’t be able to attend the course are pleased to contact the teacher.

Assessment Methods

The oral examination aims at ascertaining the knowledge of: 1) the contents of the lessons and the ancient texts explained and discussed during the lectures; 2) the main critical and methodological issues of classical philology.

1. An introduction to textual criticism 2. History of the transmission of ancient texts; presentation of case studies: a) of direct and indirect tradition; b) of texts transmitted on papyrus rolls as well as on parchment codices. 3. Text-critical analysis of some examples of Greek and Latin texts
