Course Objectives

AIMS AND COMPETENCES TO ACHIEVE:
The main targets of this course are:
1. To know the main dynamics of the transformation of settlements and cities in the centuries of the Middle Ages
2. Acquire skills in the critical reading of an archaeological document and artefact from the medieval period
3. Acquire a specific vocabulary of this discipline
4. Develop a critical analysis of written and material sources
5. Tackle a specific case study independently from historical research to archaeological reading of the context

Course Prerequisites

PREREQUISITES:
Knowledge of the main archaeological methods (stratigraphy, building archaeology, archaeometry...)
Critical analysis and contextualization of an artefact.

Teaching Methods

TEACHING METHODS:
Theoretical lectures followed by critical analysis of monuments.
Practical assignments will become an integral part of the final examination together with the discussion of the theoretical arguments analysed in class and found in the bibliography.

Assessment Methods

ASSESSMENT METHODS:
Oral examination in which the candidate will discuss the analyses and results obtained from the field analysis of an artefact and some questions on specific topics included within the bibliography or addressed in the theoretical lectures.

Contents

SUBJECT AND PROGRAMME:
Through the analysis of archaeological remains (buildings and material culture), the course covers medieval archaeology in the Mediterranean world with a main focus on the Italian peninsula.
In particular, it is organised in two sections, one theoretical and one practical. In particular, after an initial introductory part focusing on the development of medieval archaeology in Italy, a number of lessons will be devoted to the development of critical skills in the analysis of medieval contexts and buildings. Once these theoretical skills have been acquired, some study contexts will be selected on which to apply the acquired knowledge.
