Course Objectives
This course provides the students with the knowledge of the main instruments and methods of study related to the discipline, as well as to present by means of specific examples the different types of editions, also in function of commentary. At the end of the course, we expect the student to be able to recognize and provide an autonomous evaluation of a critical and/or commented edition; furthermore, the student must be capable of understanding some fundamental principles of the relationship between philology and textual criticism.
Course Prerequisites
Acquisition, during the three-year degree course, of 18 credits (CFU) in Italian Literature; Knowledge of the fundamental notions about the methodologies of philological work and the main lines of the history of Italian literature.
Teaching Methods
Lectures, also using handouts that the students will be provided with during the course and whose knowledge will be part of the final examination, along with the textbooks. In order to achieve the indicated training objectives, after some lessons dedicated to the history and fundamentals of authorial philology, and genetic criticism, case studies, single editions and examples of the relationship between philological investigation or reconstruction and interpretation will be presented and discussed.
Assessment Methods
The exam will be carried out orally and is organized in two moments that are closely linked to each other: a moment relating to the verification of basic skills acquired on the works examined and their literary historical context, discussing the individual cases tackled, and a moment relating more specifically to Vittorio Alfieri’s writing laboratory and the verification of the acquisition of the specific skills required by the study of the writer's archives and libraries.
