Obiettivi Formativi
Students will develop an advanced awareness of major issues relating to cross-linguistic contrast between English and Italian, audiovisual translation translation and the translation of spoken language.
Students are expected to reach a C1+ level in listening, speaking and writing by the end of the course and a C2 level in reading.

Prerequisiti
Students should have a C1 CEFR level competence in English.
Erasmus students should also have a B2CEFR level in Italian.
To attend the course students are expected to have a BA in Modern Languages or Translation and Interpreting and have passed three English language courses in their undergraduate career.

Metodi didattici
The course comprises lectures, seminars and workshops. In the first part of the course, the main topics will be presented. In the second part, students (in groups) will either discuss articles and chapters from the reading list or present the results of their data collection pertaining to a topic discussed during the course.
Attending students' presentations during the course will replace part of the final examination (25%).
The main module will be complemented by workshops on specialised translation activities held by a mother tongue teacher (Cel) and by writing workshops held by a tutor.
A tutor will assist students in their writing activities and paper writing.

Verifica Apprendimento
The assessment comprises two parts: a written and oral examination. As for the first part, students are required to write a paper presenting an analysis of one of the chapters/articles in the reading list or suggested during the course accompanied by a short exemplification from a film or TV series that illustrates one of the issues discussed in the reference text.
During the oral examination the student's paper will be discussed. Students will also be asked questions on the contents of the course and the required readings. The assessment of attending students' presentations make up 25% of the total score. The final score will hence derive from the assessment of the essay, the students' performance in the oral examination and, for attending students, the assessment on the presentation. It will also take into account the CEL's evaluation on the student's performance during the workshops.
Papers should not exceed 6-7 pages - ca 2500 words - references excluded and should be handed in as well as sent by email at least 10 days before the oral examination.

Contenuti
Starting from an overview of central topics in the linguistics and pragmatics of translation as applied to audiovisual translation, the course will focus on spoken language and the language of screen dialogue investigated from the viewpoint of transfer processes from one language into another in multimodal contexts for the English-Italian language pair. The course will address various pragmatic features of spoken language, with special reference to conversational routines and formulae, personal and demonstrative pronouns, address modes (tu and lei pronouns and vocatives), politeness and impoliteness phenomena. The analysis of the translations of contemporary films will be carried out in class through hands-on activities.
