Syllabus

Course Objectives

General objectives The objective is to provide students with knowledge of language development and its relationship to other psychic functions in individuals with typical and atypical development (genetic syndromes, sensory deficits, developmental delays and disorders), and tools for assessing language. Specific objectives The course aims to provide in-depth knowledge of the theoretical and methodological issues relating to the study of language acquisition in its various components, discussing the models and analyzing the main stages of both typical and atypical development. Risk factors for possible slowness or delays will also be considered as well as aspects related to diagnosis, with presentation of assessment instruments and presentation and discussion of intervention protocols. Bilingualism will also be explored, analyzing its specificity and impact on cognitive development. Furthermore, students should be able to explore some of the topics presented independently.

Course Prerequisites

A good knowledge of the stages of psychological development is necessary, in its different aspects: cognitive, social, affective-emotional, memory, etc. Furthermore, for a good understanding of the course topics, it is important to have knowledge of the main research methodologies

Teaching Methods

Lectures and in-depth seminars with talks by experts. The course is structured in two parts: a first part in which the topics are dealt with in their general aspects and will be theoretical in nature. In the second part the lectures will be more interactive with presentations also by students, and will, in part, also be conducted with the contribution of experts on particular topics (e.g. bilingualism, stuttering, specific language disorders, rehabilitation practices), with presentations and discussion of cases. Tutoring is foreseen, with hours dedicated to: a) in-depth studies and clarifications at the request of students; b) projection and discussion of videos; c) simulation of assessment tests; d) exercises with specific instruments for assessing language ability; e) presentation and discussion of papers in groups. The lesson will be face-to-face and supplementary materials and lecture slides will be provided via the KIRO university platform. The syllabus will be differentiated between attending and non-attending students

Assessment Methods

ATTENDING: students are required to attend at least two-thirds of the lessons; attendance will be periodically noted. NON-ATTENDING: the syllabus is the same as for attending students and the examinations, which take place in official sessions during the academic year, cover the entire syllabus. Examination procedures FOR ATTENDING STUDENTS The examination will take place in written form with open questions on the topics covered in the lecture, with in-depth studies compared to the textbook but present in the slides and compulsory oral integration relating to the recommended readings or replaced by in-depth work following the proposed tutoring activities. NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS The examination will be in written form with open questions on the textbook and compulsory oral integration relating to the recommended readings. Students will be able to view the papers within two months of the written exam. In the event of non-acceptance of the grade, it will only be possible to reject it once.
