Syllabus

Course Objectives

The aims of this course are:
- to acquire the most relevat notions of cellular biology, human anatomy and physiology
- to create an awareness of the application of biologcal knowledge to further studies
- to develop in students an ability to make informed evaluations about contemporary biological issues

Course Prerequisites

No specific prerequisites are required for this course. However, a basic understanding of general biology — including fundamental concepts such as cell structure, biomolecules, and basic physiological processes — is recommended to facilitate the comprehension of the topics covered during the lectures.

Teaching Methods

The course includes traditional lectures and, when possible, laboratory activities.
Lectures are delivered using PowerPoint presentations, which are made available to students.
During the laboratory sessions, students will have the opportunity to become familiar with the organization of a cell biology laboratory, observe cultured cells under the microscope, and examine blood smears microscopically.

Assessment Methods

The examination consists of an individual oral test aimed at assessing the student’s knowledge and understanding of the course contents.
The test covers at least three distinct topics, concerning cytology, histology, and anatomy and physiology.
The final evaluation is based on the level of understanding and depth of knowledge, as well as on the student’s ability to integrate and connect the concepts learned throughout the course.

Texts

No specific textbooks are required for this course.
The slides and teaching materials provided by the instructor are fully sufficient to understand and study all the topics covered during the lectures.

Contents

The course provides an introductory overview of general biology, human anatomy, and physiology.
The main topics include:

Structure and fundamental functions of the cell: plasma membrane, organelles, communication, and cellular transport.
Cell cycle (mitosis and meiosis), DNA replication, transcription, and translation.
DNA damage and repair mechanisms.
Apoptosis and necrosis.
The tumor cell and the tumor microenvironment, tumor markers, and viruses.
Organization of tissues and principles of functional anatomy.

Basics of anatomy and physiology of the main systems: nervous system and signal transmission mechanisms; respiratory system and gas exchange; digestive system, enteric nervous system, and microbiota; immune system.
