Syllabus

Course Objectives

The main objective of the course is to provide knowledge and understanding in the field of specific learning (dis)abilities, by integrating key concepts of developmental, cognitive and experimental psychology. In particular, the course will provide [1] an advanced understanding of etiological models related to specific learning (dis)abilities; [2] a guide for the application of the learned concepts in clinical practice and interventions; and [3] an ethical and deontological awareness necessary to conduct clinical and experimental procedures in the field of specific learning (dis)abilities responsibly. The course is aimed at students interested in acquiring knowledge to be able to work in the field of specific learning (dis)abilities.

Course Prerequisites

The course prerequisites include a basic knowledge of developmental/cognitive psychology. Prospective students should be familiar with the fundamental concepts in these fields to effectively benefit from the course and learning materials.

Teaching Methods

The class will take place in person. The class will adopt a variety of learning methods, by blending traditional lectures with experiential learning activities and incorporating group discussions, case-based analyses, and practical exercises. For each CFU (25 hours), it is expected: 5 hours of “didattica erogativa – DE” teaching (slides, scientific papers); 1 hour of “didattica interattiva – DI” teaching (role playing, working in small groups); and 19 hours of individual study of the bibliography (suggested book(s), scientific paper(s), slides)

Assessment Methods

The examination will be written and, at student’s choosing, oral. The exam will cover the material and topics explained and discussed during the lectures. The written exam will have 30 multiple-choice closed questions (1 point for each correct answer, 0 points for each incorrect/missing answer; cutoff for passing grade=18). For students who obtained a score at the written exam equal to or above the passing grade and who want, it will be possible to take the oral exam (which will take place immediately after the written exam); for the oral exam a maximum of 3 points will be provided and will be added to the grade obtained in the written exam.

Texts

Slides presented during the lessons (slides will be available on Kyro). Scientific articles will be suggested during the lessons

Contents

The class will present the principles of (a)typical learning development. The class will be organized in 3 sections. Section 1 will introduce the basic principles of learning psychology and specific learning disorders. Section 2 will introduce knowledge of prevention and rehabilitation of specific learning disorders. Section 3 will introduce the neurobiological underpinnings of specific learning disorders. The class will describe how to administer and interpret some clinical evaluation tests. In addition, the class will describe some remediation techniques specific for learning (dis)abilities. Where possible, the class will host monographic lectures on specific topics by experts in the field. The course content and materials are available for download from KYRO. The course content will be addressed taking into account ethical and deontological principles which, according to the specific theme, will be described in detail by the Professor from both a theoretical and practical (e.g., by discussing clinical cases) point of view. The class does NOT differentiate between attending and non-attending students. However, due to the variety of contents and practical exercise, attendance is highly recommended.
