Obiettivi Formativi
At the successful conclusion of this module, you should be able to demonstrate the following module level learning outcomes (MLOs):
MLO.1 Knowledge & Understanding You will be able to explain pathological mechanisms, features of injury and repair, causes of pathological changes, disease processes, and their clinical relevance.
MLO.2 Application of Knowledge You will be able to apply pathology concepts to disease progression, interpret pathological changes
MLO.3 Autonomy of Judgement. You will be able to make informed judgments on complex pathological processes and reflect on shared mechanisms like inflammation and immunopathologies.
MLO.4 Communication Skills. You will be able to clearly communicate pathological mechanisms and present pathology findings in writing.
MLO.5 Learning Skills You will be able to navigate lectures, practicals, and digital resources, integrating pathology with related disciplines for academic and clinical development.

Prerequisiti
The prerequisites are indicated in the Integrated Course Syllabus for BOD
Metodi didattici
Teaching methods include lectures, discussion and guided independent study. Lectures present key concepts (supports CLO.1, CLO.2) and include interactive discussion of clinical cases (supports CLO.2-3), guided readings and the e-learning platform (supports CLO.5). Teaching will include guidance to help you prepare for the exam (supports CLO.4) and throughout you will be presented with references to further readings and other materials to support your development (supports CLO.5).
Verifica Apprendimento
The assessment process is indicated in the Integrated Course Syllabus for BOD.
Testi
You should be aware that the examination paper is based on the content of the module(s) as taught. For the purposes of revision and exam preparation, however, there is a wide range of excellent textbooks for Natural Science and Medical students and suggested texts are provided below. Suggested texts: Kumar V, Abbas AK, Aster J. Robbins & Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease. 10th ed. Elsevier; 2020. Abbas AK, Lichtman AH, Pillai S S. Cellular and Molecular Immunology. 10th ed. Elsiever; 2021
Contenuti
This General Pathology course provides a comprehensive framework for understanding the fundamental processes underlying major human diseases, including cell injury, inflammation, tissue regeneration and repair, immunopathologies, and cancer. It integrates molecular, cellular, and clinical perspectives to offer a coherent understanding of disease mechanisms. The Module will also include an 'in depth' discussion of model systems (cells, organ cultures, organisms) that have proved particularly valuable for the study of diseases. Finally, the Course offers you an analysis of the molecular basis of disease and how this disease processes at the cellular, tissue and organ level.
Topics you will study in this module include:
CELLULAR PATHOLOGY
1. Cellular homeostasis
2. Causes of disease
3. Mechanisms of cell injury and pathways of cell death
4. Cellular adaptation and stress responses
INFLAMMATION
5. Hematopoiesis and inflammatory cells
6. Soluble inflammatory mediators
7. Leukocyte migration and acute inflammatory responses
8. Chronic inflammation, tissue repair, and fibrosis
9. Mechanisms of pathogen elimination
VASCULAR PATHOLOGY
10. Angiogenesis and vascular remodeling
11. Thrombotic diseases and atherosclerosis
TUMOR BIOLOGY
12. Principles of tumor biology
13. Classification of benign and malignant neoplasms
14. Molecular mechanisms of cancer
15. Clinical implications of tumors
IMMUNOPATHOLOGY
16. Hypersensitivity reactions
17. Hypersensitivity reactions (Part 2) and autoimmune disorders
18. Graft rejection and primary immunodeficiencies
19. Tumor immunology and emerging immunotherapies
