Obiettivi Formativi

At the successful conclusion of this module, you should be able to demonstrate the following module level learning outcomes (MLOs): - MLO.1: Identify phases of digestion, secretion, absorption, and motility. - MLO.2: Apply concepts to malabsorption, acid-base disturbances, and motility disorders. - MLO.3: Critically analyse control mechanisms of digestion and gut-brain interactions. - MLO.4: Communicate clearly about digestive processes and their systemic implications. - MLO.5: Use further readings to understand the role of gut microbiota in physiology.

Metodi didattici

Teaching methods include lectures and include interactive discussion of clinical cases, guided readings and the e-learning platform (supports LO.1-3). Teaching will include guidance to help you prepare for the exam (supports LO.4) and throughout you will be presented with references to further readings and other materials to support your development (supports LO.5).

Contenuti

Themes and topics addressed in this module include: - Nutrition elements, metabolism (anabolism and catabolism). - Organization and functions of the gastrointestinal system. Mouth, Pharynx and Esophagus. Stomach. Small Intestine. Large Intestine. - Structure of the gastrointestinal tract wall. - Secretions of the gastrointestinal system: saliva, mucus, gastric secretions, pancreatic secretions, hepatic bile production and bile secretion. Composition, functions, mechanisms of secretion and their regulations. - Digestion and absorption of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, vitamins, water, inorganic salts and minerals. - Regulation of gastrointestinal processes (nervous and hormonal regulation). - The Enteric Nervous System (ENS): structure and function. - Gastrointestinal tract motility and its control. - Pathophysiology of the Gastrointestinal Tract. Ulcers. Vomiting. Lactose Intolerance. Constipation and Diarrhea. - Gut microbiota: composition, roles, host-microbiota interactions.
