Obiettivi Formativi

At the successful conclusion of this integrated course, you should be able to demonstrate the following module learning outcomes (LOs):

Knowledge and Understanding
• LO.1 Describe the clinical presentation, pathophysiology and natural history of common surgical diseases affecting the gastrointestinal tract, hepatobiliary system, pancreas, thyroid and breast.
• LO.2 Explain the principles of surgical assessment, diagnosis and management of common surgical conditions, including acute abdomen, gastrointestinal bleeding, intestinal obstruction, peritonitis and other emergency presentations.
Applying Knowledge and Understanding
• LO.3 Apply knowledge of surgical pathology and clinical semeiotics to interpret patient presentations, integrate findings from history, physical examination, laboratory investigations and imaging studies and formulate an initial diagnostic approach.
• LO.4 Evaluate the role of diagnostic investigations and evidence-based approaches in supporting clinical decision-making and the management of patients with surgical diseases.
Communication Skills
• LO.5 Communicate clinical findings, diagnostic reasoning and principles of surgical management using appropriate scientific and medical terminology.

Metodi didattici

Teaching is primarily delivered through face-to-face lectures supported by clinical case examples and discussion of representative surgical scenarios.
Lectures provide the theoretical foundations required to understand the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic approach and fundamental principles of management of common surgical diseases (supports LO1–LO2).
Clinical cases are used to illustrate the interpretation of signs and symptoms, the formulation of differential diagnoses and the selection and interpretation of appropriate diagnostic investigations. Case-based discussion promotes the integration of clinical information and the development of clinical reasoning and evidence-based decision-making skills (supports LO3–LO4).
Students are encouraged to actively participate in discussions, enabling them to consolidate their knowledge, communicate clinical concepts using appropriate medical terminology and develop the skills required for subsequent clinical and ward-based learning (supports LO5).

Contenuti

The General Surgery module introduces students to the clinical presentation, diagnostic approach and fundamental principles of management of common surgical diseases. The module focuses on the recognition of symptoms and signs requiring surgical evaluation and on the integration of clinical history, physical examination, laboratory investigations and diagnostic imaging in the assessment of surgical patients.

The module is organised into the following thematic areas:

1. Principles of Surgical Clinical Assessment
Students are introduced to the general approach to patients with surgical conditions, including the interpretation of symptoms and clinical findings and the principles of diagnostic reasoning.
Particular attention is given to:
• clinical presentation of surgical diseases;
• evaluation of abdominal symptoms and abdominal pain;
• principles of differential diagnosis;
• role of laboratory investigations and imaging in surgical assessment;
• principles of evidence-based decision-making in surgical practice.
2. Abdominal Surgical Diseases
The module addresses the clinical features, diagnostic approach and management principles of the main abdominal surgical conditions.
Topics include:
• acute abdomen;
• oesophagitis and peptic ulcer disease;
• cholecystitis;
• pancreatitis;
• pancreatic tumours;
• liver tumours;
• jaundice and its differential diagnosis;
• colorectal cancer;
• acute appendicitis;
• Meckel’s diverticulitis;
• acute diverticulitis of the colon;
• portal hypertension;
• gastrointestinal bleeding;
• intestinal obstruction;
• peritonitis;
• abdominal hernias;
• intestinal ischaemia and infarction.
3. Diseases of the Neck and Breast
The module introduces the clinical assessment and diagnostic principles of common surgical conditions affecting the neck and breast, including:
• cervical lymphadenopathy;
• thyroid disorders;
• benign breast tumours;
• carcinoma of the female breast.
Throughout the module, emphasis is placed on the correlation between clinical presentation, diagnostic investigations and therapeutic strategies. Clinical cases are used to support the development of clinical reasoning, interpretation of surgical presentations and understanding of evidence-based approaches to patient management.
