Obiettivi Formativi
LO1. Knowledge and Understanding
1. Describe the biological, molecular, and pathological mechanisms involved in the development and classification of haematological malignancies.
2. Explain the clinical features, diagnostic principles, and basic therapeutic approaches of major haematological malignancies.
LO2. Applying Knowledge and Understanding
3. Recognise the main clinical, laboratory, and molecular findings supporting the diagnosis and classification of common haematological malignancies.
LO3. Making Judgements
4. Integrate clinical, laboratory, and pathological information to formulate diagnostic hypotheses in patients with suspected haematological malignancies.
LO4. Communication Skills
5. Communicate key clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic aspects of haematological malignancies using appropriate haematological and oncological terminology.
This module is delivered as an integrated component of [501855] HAEMATOLOGY module (3 CFU) teaching programme and focuses specifically on the oncological aspects of haematological disease.

Metodi didattici
Teaching methods include lectures, discussion of clinical cases, guided independent study, and use of the e-learning platform.
Lectures provide the theoretical foundations of haematology, haematologic oncology, and haematopathology, supporting the acquisition of knowledge related to normal haematopoiesis, disease mechanisms, classification, diagnosis, and treatment principles (LO1–LO2).
Interactive clinical case discussions support the application of knowledge to diagnostic scenarios, interpretation of laboratory and pathological findings, and the integration of clinical information for diagnostic reasoning (LO3–LO4).
Discussion activities and examination preparation support the communication of haematological concepts and clinical findings using appropriate medical terminology (LO5).

Contenuti
This module is delivered as an integrated component of the Haematology teaching programme and focuses specifically on the oncological aspects of haematology.
The module provides an understanding of the biological and molecular mechanisms underlying the development and progression of haematological malignancies, including genetic alterations, cellular pathways involved in malignant transformation, and their relevance to disease classification and targeted treatment approaches.
The programme addresses the classification, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic approach, and treatment principles of major haematological malignancies, including myeloid and lymphoid neoplasms.
Specific topics include:
• myeloproliferative neoplasms, including chronic myeloid leukaemia, polycythaemia vera, essential thrombocythaemia, and primary myelofibrosis;
• myelodysplastic syndromes;
• acute myeloid leukaemia and acute lymphoblastic leukaemia;
• Hodgkin lymphoma and non-Hodgkin lymphomas;
• chronic lymphocytic leukaemia;
• plasma cell neoplasms, including monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS), multiple myeloma, Waldenström macroglobulinaemia, and AL amyloidosis.
Particular emphasis is placed on the integration of clinical findings, laboratory investigations, pathological classification, and molecular features in the diagnosis, prognostic assessment, and management of haematological malignancies.
The module also introduces the principles of modern treatment approaches, including chemotherapy, targeted therapies, immunotherapies, supportive care, and haematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
