Syllabus

Obiettivi Formativi

Knowledge and Understanding
LO1. Describe the basic terminology and principles of clinical epidemiology, including epidemiological study designs, measures of disease occurrence and association, and the main domains of clinical research (diagnosis, prognosis, aetiology, prevention and treatment).
LO2. Explain the principles of evidence-based medicine, its role as a guide for clinical decision-making, and the methods used to assess the quality and relevance of clinical evidence.
Applying Knowledge and Understanding
LO3. Apply epidemiological concepts to formulate clinical research questions, including definition of outcomes, determinants and appropriate research frameworks such as PICO.
LO4. Interpret clinical research protocols and scientific publications by evaluating study design, epidemiological measures and methodological quality.
Making Judgements
LO5. Critically evaluate epidemiological evidence and identify the strengths and limitations of clinical research findings.

Metodi didattici

Teaching is delivered through face-to-face lectures combined with practical activities based on scientific articles, public datasets and case-based exercises. Lectures provide the theoretical foundations of clinical epidemiology, including study designs, bias, epidemiological measures, clinical research methodology and evidence-based medicine (LO.1–LO.2).
Practical sessions under teacher supervision allow students to apply epidemiological concepts to formulate clinical research questions, interpret research findings and critically evaluate scientific evidence (LO.3–LO.5). Discussion of published clinical studies and examples related to diseases addressed in the other modules of the Disease Control and Eradication integrated course promotes the application of epidemiological reasoning to clinical and public health scenarios.

The module focuses on the application of epidemiological approaches to clinical research, evidence-based medicine and decision-making in healthcare.
The programme includes the following topics:
1. Review of principles of Clinical Epidemiology and Study Designs
Basic terminology and principles of clinical epidemiology.
Observational and experimental study designs used in clinical research.
Measures of disease occurrence and association.
Strengths, and limitations and potential biases of different epidemiological approaches.
2. Clinical Research Questions and Evidence-Based Medicine
Clinical research domains, including diagnosis, prognosis, aetiology, prevention and treatment.
Formulation of answerable clinical research questions, including the PICO framework (population, intervention, comparison and outcome).
Principles of evidence-based medicine and approaches for assessing the quality of scientific evidence.
3. Critical Appraisal of Clinical Research
Structure and interpretation of clinical research protocols and scientific publications.
Evaluation of study design, epidemiological measures and methodological quality.
Critical reading and interpretation of current clinical research papers.
4. Application of Epidemiological Methods to Disease Investigation
Application of epidemiological principles to clinical and public health problems.
Principles of outbreak disease investigation and interpretation of epidemiological data.
Examples of diseases discussed in the other modules of the Disease Control and Eradication integrated course.
