Syllabus

Obiettivi Formativi

Knowledge and Understanding
Describe the physiology of the major endocrine axes and explain the pathophysiology, clinical features, and complications of common endocrine disorders affecting the pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, and reproductive endocrine systems.
Explain the principles underlying the diagnosis and management of endocrine diseases, including the interpretation of hormonal investigations and endocrine function tests.
Applying Knowledge and Understanding
Apply knowledge of endocrine physiology and pathophysiology to interpret clinical presentations and diagnostic findings in patients with endocrine disorders.
Formulate an appropriate diagnostic approach and discuss the principles of management for common endocrine diseases.
Communication Skills
Discuss endocrine disorders and their management using appropriate medical terminology and clear clinical reasoning.

Prerequisiti

For further information please see the Integrated Course Syllabus for [508272] - DISEASE OF THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM AND METABOLISM

Metodi didattici

Teaching methods include lectures, discussion of clinical cases, guided independent study, and, where available, clinical observation in outpatient and inpatient endocrine settings.
Lectures provide the fundamental knowledge required to understand endocrine physiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of endocrine disorders (supports LO1–LO2). Discussion of clinical cases supports the application of knowledge to diagnostic scenarios, interpretation of endocrine investigations, and development of clinical reasoning skills (supports LO3–LO4).
Guided independent study and additional learning resources support consolidation of knowledge and preparation for the oral examination. Clinical activities support the integration of theoretical knowledge with patient-centred endocrine care (supports LO5).

Contenuti

The module provides an introduction to the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management of diseases of the endocrine system, with particular emphasis on their implications for internal medicine and multidisciplinary patient care.
The programme begins with neuroendocrinology and disorders of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis, including pituitary adenomas, hyperprolactinaemia, acromegaly, Cushing’s disease, hypopituitarism, and disorders of the neurohypophysis, including diabetes insipidus.
The module addresses thyroid physiology and pathology, including the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis, hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, nodular thyroid disease, and thyroid cancer.
Disorders of calcium and mineral metabolism are covered, including hyperparathyroidism, hypoparathyroidism, and multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) syndromes.
The programme also includes adrenal disorders, including adrenal insufficiency and Cushing’s syndrome, together with female and male reproductive endocrinology.
Clinical cases are used throughout the module to illustrate diagnostic pathways, interpretation of endocrine investigations, and principles of patient management.
