Knowledge and Understanding Describe the pathophysiological mechanisms and clinical features of the main metabolic disorders, including diabetes mellitus, obesity, dyslipidaemia, and disorders of purine metabolism. Explain the principles underlying the diagnosis and management of common metabolic diseases and their complications. Applying Knowledge and Understanding Apply knowledge of metabolic pathways and clinical findings to interpret diagnostic investigations and formulate an appropriate diagnostic approach. Communication Skills Discuss metabolic disease processes and clinical management strategies using appropriate medical terminology.

Metodi didattici
Teaching methods include lectures, discussion of clinical cases, and guided independent study. Lectures provide the fundamental knowledge required to understand the pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, complications, and management principles of metabolic diseases (supports LO1–LO2). Discussion of clinical cases supports the application of knowledge to diagnostic scenarios, interpretation of clinical and laboratory findings, and development of clinical reasoning skills (supports LO3). Guided independent study and additional learning resources support consolidation of knowledge and preparation for the oral examination (supports LO4).

Contenuti
The module provides an introduction to the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and diagnostic approach to the main metabolic diseases. The programme includes disorders of carbohydrate metabolism, with particular emphasis on diabetes mellitus, including acute and chronic complications and principles of clinical management. The module addresses obesity and insulin resistance, including their metabolic consequences, as well as dyslipidaemia and disorders of lipid metabolism. The principles of purine metabolism disorders are covered, with particular emphasis on gout. The module also includes metabolic abnormalities secondary to endocrine diseases and the integration of metabolic findings into the clinical evaluation of patients. Clinical cases are used to illustrate diagnostic approaches and the clinical management of common metabolic disorders.
