Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (29/09/2025 - 16/01/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

It aims to provide skills for the optimization (through management and structural upgrades) of the performance of water and waste treatment plants and at the same time the valorization of the residues produced.

Course Prerequisites

Knowledge of chemistry, Sanitary-Environmental engineering, and plant design.

Teaching Methods

The course is organized with lessons and exercises. The training activities are completed by technical visits to waste treatment plants.

Assessment Methods

Method: written test followed by oral test Evaluation type: rating Number and types of tests: final test (written + oral). Access to the oral test is permitted upon passing the written test (with at least 18/30). Any materials useful for taking the test and permitted during the test: calculator. Consultation of notes/texts is not permitted.

Texts

1 - Course slides. 2 - Bertanza Giorgio, Collivignarelli Carlo (2012). Water treatment plants: functionality checks and testing – operating manual. Hoepli. 3 - Bertanza Giorgio, Foladori Paola, Guglielmi Lorena (2018). Material and energy recovery in wastewater treatment plants. Maggioli Editore - Ambiente & Territorio. 4 - Metcalf & Eddy (2005). Wastewater engineering: treatment and reuse. McGraw Hill.

Contents

PLANT OPTIMIZATION: Treatment plant optimization criteria. Development of monitoring plans. Biological treatability studies. Functional tests (hydrodynamics, oxygen transfer capacity, sedimentation rate). Energy savings in wastewater treatment plants.
