The course aims to introduce the basic contents and instruments of Italian literature, and to provide a more specific competence on issues, moments and authors copies of Italian literary tradition, investigated in the texts and in the secondary bibliography.

Assessment Methods
Written test lasting four hours,. The written test consists of questions (a part of which with answers to be ticked) and analysis of the poetic text. Everything is related to sections 1 and 2 of the course’s syllabus, namely: section 1 Italian literature of the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries; section 2 Content of the lessons. A tutoring service is provided for helping to prepare students in need (especially foreign students, but not only). Further information will be granted at the beginning of the course. Attendance is strongly recommended. Students who are unable to attend the classes could receive an alternative program for section 2 according to the Professor’s decision. Section 1. will be the same for not attendants too.

Point 1 Knowledge of Italian literature of the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The following topics will be studied: The Scapigliatura ; Naturalism, Verismo, Capuana, Verga; Carducci; Pascoli; D'Annunzio; The Crepuscular Poetry; The avant-garde; Marinetti; Pirandello; Svevo; Ungaretti; Saba; Montale For the authors and movements indicated above, is required the knowledge (reading and commentary) of a selection of anthologized texts, whose list is available on KIRO page. Reference manual: C. BOLOGNA, P. ROCCHI, Rose fresh aulentissima, Loescher, 2011 vol. 5 Naturalism and Decadentism; vol. 6 The early twentieth century. (Another manual may be used only if equipped with a rich anthological selection). Point 2: content of the Lessons The lessons will be organized according to the following schedule: Module A: Reading and analysis of some cantos from Dante's Inferno The lessons will illustrate some key cantos from Dante's Inferno, investigated through a theoretical and stylistic approach Reference text: Dante, Inferno, edited by A. M. Chiavacci Leonardi, Mondadori The critical bibliography and the Lecturae Dantis to refer to will be provided during the lessons. However, please read the introduction by A. M. Chiavacci Leonardi to the aforementioned edition Module B: G. Leopardi, "Canti". The lessons aim to investigate some important Leopardi's "Canti", also trough the reference to leopardian autographs Reference texts: G. Leopardi, "Canti", edited by F.
