Ability to understand and connect the developments of the main political and institutional structures of ancient Rome, especially in the transition from the Republican period to the Imperial era. Ability to identify the most suitable and relevant information for the reconstruction of a historical event from various types of sources.
Course Prerequisites
- Knowledge of the main themes, issues and events in Roman history between the 2nd century BC and the 3rd century AD. - Familiarity with Latin (and possibly Greek) for an adequate understanding of the ancient sources presented during classes.

Frontal lectures, sided by handouts and power point presentations; seminar classes held by students.

Contents
The programme covers the study of the Roman Senate both as an institutional assembly and as a political and social ordo. Lectures will focus on the transition from the Republic to the Principate (up to around the 3rd century AD) and on the new role assumed by the Senate during this period, alongside other emerging protagonists of the imperial politics.
