Aims of the course are enhancing the language skills and acquiring, also by means of the reading of texts in Latin, a basic knowledge of the chronological profile and generic categories of Latin literature.
Course Prerequisites
Having passed the exam of Latin language and literature (basic course) and, consequently, having acquired a solid basic knowledge of Latin language.
Teaching Methods
Lectures during which we will read, translate and comment on Latin texts in order to provide a methodological approach to text and an inductive presentation of the various authors and / or literary genres faced.
Assessment Methods
The exam will take place in oral form and will focus on (1) translation and linguistic-grammatical analysis of the texts of Cicero and Virgil indicated in the program, (2) verification of historical-literary knowledge with particular regard to the classification of the most significant authors and of their works in space, time and in the frame of the literary genre to which they belong, (3) contextualization, translation and commentary on the texts of the monographic part, presented in class. Anyone who wishes can present point 1 in an appeal and then points 2 and 3 in any subsequent appeal.The choice for this option must be communicated at the time of registration by writing in the NOTE field "only texts" in the first case or "only monographic" in the second. The completion of the exam has no deadline.

Exam schedule: 1) Reading, translation, and linguistic-grammatical commentary on chapters 1-51 of Cicero's Laelius and an anthology of passages from Virgil's Aeneid (the material, accompanied by a concise linguistic-grammatical commentary, will be available on Kiro). 2) Historical study of Latin literature from its origins to Apuleius with particular regard to the classification of the most significant authors and their works in space, time and within the framework of the literary genre to which they belong. (Reference manuals: A. Cavarzere, A. De Vivo, P. Mastandrea, Letteratura latina. Una sintesi storica, Roma, Carocci editore, 2015 or G.B. Conte, Letteratura latina, Firenze, Le Monnier Università, 2012). 3) Monographic course: Elegiacc Poetry: a Reading Path (The anthology of texts, which will be required to be contextualized, translated and analyzed, will be provided during the course and, at the end of the course, will be available on the Kiro IT platform). For the hexameter, metric reading or, at least, theoretical knowledge of the metric scheme of the verse is required (in this regard, it may be useful to consult the chapter Fundamenti di metrica by A. Traina, G. Bernardi Perini, Propedeutica al latino universitario, Bologna, Patron, 2007).

Please note that for the preparation of the texts by Cicero and Virgil it may be useful to attend specific activities of tutoring and/or the modules of the Laboratory of Latin dedicated, respectively, to Latin prosody and metrics with readings from the Aeneid and to the linguistic analysis of the De amicitia, which can also be attended independently of the acquisition of the Laboratory's CFU.
