Syllabus

Course Objectives

Aims of the course are enhancing the language skills and acquiring, also by means of the reading of texts in Latin, a deep knowledge of the chronological profile and generic categories of Latin literature to be applied to the analysis of the texts.

Course Prerequisites

Having passed the exam of Latin language and literature (advanced course) and, consequently, having acquired a good knowledge of Latin language and the essential notions of Latin literature from the beginnings to Apuleius.

Teaching Methods

Lectures during which we will read, translate and make a historical-literary commentary on Latin texts in order to provide a methodology of textual analysis and an inductive presentation of the various authors and / or literary genres faced.

Assessment Methods

The examination will take place in oral form and will concern in sequence the four items indicated in the program.
The requests for the four items are as follows:
1) and 3) translation and linguistic-grammatical commentary of the texts, on the basis also of the notions contained in the volume by Traina and Bernardi Perini. As regards the hexameter and the elegiac couplet, a metrical reading or, at least, a theoretical knowledge of the metrical pattern of the verses is required
2) framing of the various authors and their production within space, time and the context of the literary genre of belonging
4) translation and critical-literary commentary of the texts.
It is possible to present points (1) and (2) in one exam and points (3) and (4) in any subsequent exam.

Please note that for the preparation of the item 1 of the program it may be useful to attend apposite tutoring lessons. Instead for the preparation of the item 3 of the program it may be useful to attend the module of the Laboratory of Latin dedicated to 'Technical notions of Latin language', which can also be attended independently of the acquisition of the Laboratory's CFU.
