At the successful conclusion of this module, you should be able to demonstrate the following module level learning outcomes (MLOs): MLO.1 Knowledge & Understanding You will be able to count cells in synthetic biological fluids and evaluate the in vitro activity of drugs and other molecules. MLO.2 Application You will be able to set up tests to evaluate the activity of compounds and biomolecules. MLO.3 Autonomy of Judgement You will be able to interpret results obtained by in vitro tests and correlate these data with clinical evidence. MLO.4 Communication Skills You will be able to work collaboratively with peers in lab settings. MLO.5 Learning Skills You will be able to reflect on lab learning and prepare for related exam questions.
Prerequisiti
The prerequisites are indicated in the Integrated Course Syllabus for BOD and include a knowledge of cancer biology, excel or Google sheets.
Metodi didattici
This laboratory module by provides you with the opportunity to carry out practical exercises (MLO2., ML.O. 3) in the laboratory in small groups, working with peers (MLO.4., MLO-5). This model includes the following teaching methods: explanatory lectures and presentations (MLO.1), group-work and instructor guided lab exercises.

Contenuti
This module aims to provide you with practical experience of laboratory-based work and will introduce you with practical experience of evaluating: the in vitro activity of drugs and other molecules on cancer cells through different assays; count of synthetic blood samples associated to different clinical cases. At the end of the laboratory, you will be able to set up tests to evaluate the activity of compounds and biomolecules and to critically evaluate obtained results. Throughout the module you will be divided in smaller groups (2-3 people). The focus of the module is on guided laboratory work and you will gain direct experience of carrying out the following activities: in vitro assay to test drugs in cancer cell lines; in vitro assay to evaluate pro-growth activity of cytokines on cancer cells; Phenotypical characterization of cancer cell lines; counts of blood cells with the optical microscope.
