The aim of the course is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the principles and applications of nanobiotechnology, with particular emphasis on the design, development, characterization, and biomedical applications of nanoscale systems.
The course aims to provide students with knowledge of the main classes of nanomaterials and nanostructures used in biotechnology and medicine, including their physicochemical properties, functionalization strategies, biological interactions, and potential applications in drug delivery, diagnostics, imaging, and regenerative medicine.
At the end of the course, students will acquire the ability to:
understand the fundamental principles underlying the design and development of nanobiotechnological platforms;
describe the main types of nanomaterials and nanocarriers used in biomedical and pharmaceutical applications;
evaluate the relationship between nanomaterial properties, biological interactions, and therapeutic performance;
understand the strategies for surface modification, targeting, and controlled delivery of bioactive molecules;
critically analyze scientific literature related to emerging nanobiotechnology applications;
discuss the advantages, limitations, and safety aspects associated with the use of nanomaterials in biomedical fields.
The course also aims to develop students’ ability to interpret scientific data and communicate recent advances in nanobiotechnology through literature-based discussions and presentations.

Prerequisiti
Students should have basic knowledge of biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, and chemistry. Preliminary knowledge of pharmaceutical sciences, biotechnology, and biomaterials is also recommended to facilitate the understanding of nanobiotechnological principles, nanomaterial design, and their biomedical and pharmaceutical applications.
Metodi didattici
The course is delivered through frontal lectures, interactive discussions, and innovative teaching approaches based on active learning methodologies. Lectures are supported by PowerPoint presentations, multimedia resources, and additional teaching materials, which are made available to students through the dedicated teaching section on the Moodle KIRO platform.
Students will be actively involved through group-based activities focused on the critical analysis and presentation of scientific literature related to nanobiotechnology and its biomedical and pharmaceutical applications. These activities aim to promote collaborative learning, scientific communication skills, and the ability to critically evaluate recent advances in the field.
Interactive teaching methods, including case studies, literature-based discussions, and problem-solving activities, are adopted to encourage students’ active participation and the application of theoretical concepts to real-world biomedical challenges.
Lessons (classroom hours/year): 20
Group activities and exercises (classroom hours/year): 4

Verifica Apprendimento
The verification of learning aims to assess students’ knowledge and competences acquired in the field of nanobiotechnology, including the principles underlying the design, development, characterization, and biomedical applications of nanomaterials and nanosystems.
Students’ learning is assessed through a computer-based written test performed on the Moodle KIRO platform in the classroom using students’ own laptops. The examination consists of multiple-choice questions and open-ended questions aimed at evaluating both the acquisition of theoretical knowledge and the ability to critically discuss concepts related to nanomaterials, nanomedicine, drug delivery systems, and biomedical applications of nanotechnologies.
As part of the assessment, students will participate in a group-based activity focused on the critical analysis and presentation of scientific literature related to the topics addressed in the course. The activity will contribute to the final examination grade with a score ranging from 1 to 3 points. The evaluation will be assigned to the group as a whole and not to individual students, based on the quality of the selected scientific article, critical analysis, scientific accuracy, and effectiveness of the presentation.
The final grade will integrate the result obtained in the written examination and the evaluation of the group activity.
