The course aims to provide students with the language and cultural skills necessary to understand General English and express themselves correctly at this level. It also aims to introduce students to the legal language. Throughout the acquisition of a specialized lexicon, they will be able to use this language to get information in their field of interest.
Course Prerequisites
CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages): Level B1+/B2: https://rm.coe.int/common-european-framework-of-reference-for-languages-learning-teaching/16809ea0d4. The Department has scheduled a 20 + 20 hours preparatory course to reach the B2/C1 language proficiency level required for students who do not have a certificate of competence obtained no more than three years prior to registering for the oral exam.
Teaching Methods
General English preparatory course: language lessons and exercises. Legal English main course: lectures, language lessons and exercises. Classes will be taught in English. Students who do not have a B2 certificate obtained no more than three years prior to registering for the oral exam must demonstrate that they have reached a B2+/C1 level in reading comprehension and use of English through a written test (multiple choice, gap filling, short open answers). Once they have passed the General English written test, they will be admitted to the Legal English oral test, which will focus on their knowledge of the topics covered in class.
Assessment Methods
Students will have to pass a General English written test (multiple choice questions) at the B2+/ C1 level of CERF, unless they have an international assessment certificate at the level required. The results of the whole exam will be expressed in Ottimo (excellent) Distinto Buono Discreto Sufficiente (Sufficient)

B) The General English preparatory teaching will start from a B1+/B2 CERF level to reach a B2+/C1 level.
In addition to the classes focusing on the grammar and lexical topics covered by the final written test, additional support will be offered for students with a level below B1 (pre-intermediate) (remedial course).
The General English test will be the same for all students (at UPPER INTERMEDIATE / ADVANCED level).

Contents
General English preparatory course: grammar, structures, lexicon within the B2+/C1 level of CERF. Legal English main course: a primary focus of the course is the analysis of the main lexical, syntactic and stylistic aspects of legal English. The drafting of legal correspondence will also be studied and practised. The second part of the course will focus on the study of the main lexicon of international contract law, litigation and alternative dispute resolution. Students will also be able to read and understand contracts and other types of texts specifically related to their degree course.
