Course Objectives

The main objectives of the course are to train students to understand the chemistry and biochemistry as a preliminary basis for the course of Biochemistry. It is given further emphasis to the main metabolic pathways and their regulation at the molecular level, cellular and tissue and, in order to provide students with the biochemical knowledge to be applied in the practice of health rehabilitation, the arguments are treated by integrating chemical, physiological and pathological human biochemistry.

Course Prerequisites

It is a requirement for students enrolled in the Study Courses of the Class of Degrees of the Health Professions of the Rehabilitation Health Professions, including the Chemistry Course, who have obtained an overall score of less than 20% of the maximum score (i.e. a score on the admission test lower than 18) to complete Additional Educational Obligations (OFA) in order to make up the gaps in their knowledge.
It is a requirement that students complete the requisite additional educational obligations (OFA) prior to undertaking the Biology and Biological Chemistry (AF 50346) examinations in the initial year of the course.
In order to fulfil the OFA, students are required to attend ad hoc tutoring sessions in the Biochemistry subjects and complete a test comprising 10 exercises. The test will be marked out of 10, with a minimum of 6 correct exercises required to pass.
The lecturers responsible for the respective subjects will provide the necessary organisational details regarding the courses in question, publish the relevant teaching materials via the Kiro platform and set up two or more OFA appointments during the course of the academic year. It is the responsibility of the students to fulfil any additional training obligations by the end of the first year of the course.

Teaching Methods

The course will take place with oral lectures that will make use of multimedia systems. .

Assessment Methods

The examination of the Biochemistry course includes a written exam in general and inorganic chemistry and organic, the passing of which is crucial to take the written exam in propedeutic biochemistry. Both written tests will focus on the main topics of the course contents.
The test is considered passed with a grade of NO less than 18/30.
Appropriate testing arrangements will be made for students who fall within the categories of Specific Learning Disabilities (SAD) and Special Educational Needs (SED).
