Syllabus

Course Objectives

The learning outcomes of this course include:
• The knowledge and understanding, and ability to explain how the main theoretical tenets and processes and empirical results related to the Social Cognition approach can be applied in different social contexts.
• The ability to critically analyze the literature related to the Social Cognition approach in an autonomous way, and to suggest alternative theoretical and methodological solutions.
• The ability to autonomously develop ideas for research and interventions inspired by the Social Cognition approach.

Course Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of experimental psychology theories and methods, and English.

Teaching Methods

The learning and teaching methods include:
• In-class lectures.
• Group/in class discussions.
• Classroom exercises/activities.

Assessment Methods

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of the topic, critical analysis, and oral presentation skills.
The summative assessment consists of:
• A in itinere written exam on 17th December 2025 – an oral exam in the subsequent exam sessions.
The formative assessment consists of:
• The verbal feedback students will receive to their answers to the discussion questions during the lectures.

Contents

This module will introduce students to the applications to different social contexts of the main theoretical and empirical results of the Social-Cognitive approach to Social Psychology. We will examine the main social cognitive processes, such as social categorization and stereotyping, and how they can bear on individual and social issues. The indicative content of the module includes:
• Introduction to Social Cognition.
• What is Social Cognition?
• The metaphors of the social thinker.
• Applications of Social Cognition to Health Psychology: risk perception, rationality and irrationality, and heuristic processes underlying smoking behavior.
• Applications of Social Cognition to Clinical Psychology: automatisms; rumination; social memory and trauma-related memories; social-cognitive theories of depression and anxiety.
• Impression formation, social categorization, stereotypes and stereotyping (e.g., the Stereotype Content Model).
• Applications to Political Psychology and implications for social policies: intersectionality and intersectional invisibility.
