Syllabus

Obiettivi Formativi

This course aims at providing a general knowledge about experimental brain research and clinical applications. Throughout the different classes, the student will get theoretical and practical skills related to experimental methods in neuroscientific clinical research. The expected outcomes will concern the student’s ability of reading and understanding a clinical neuroscientific study (i.e., knowing the overall theoretical background, understanding the employed methodology, extracting the main results and interpreting the main findings in the light of future research) and creating associated scientific material (e.g. abstract, graphic representation, highlights)

Prerequisiti

Basics of experimental psychology and cognitive neuroscience

Metodi didattici

The course will employ frontal lessons and practical activities with interactive processes.
The course will be conducted through in-person lectures. For each credit (25 hours), the following are planned: -5 hours of delivery-based teaching (DE) (content presentation through slides, scientific papers, and videos); -1 hour of interactive teaching (DI) (guided exercises, small group critiques on topics provided by the instructor); - 19 hours of self-study on the course bibliography and provided slides.

Verifica Apprendimento

Based on the practical activities developed during the classes, the final exam will consist of a written examination with both multiple choices and open questions on experimental methods and their applications. For students who will not participate in the practical activities during the course, the exam will consist of an oral examination on the content of the theoretical lectures and additional scientific articles provided via Kiro. (Grade: 0/30)

Testi

All the material (slides and scientific articles) will be available on the e-learning platform.

Contenuti

The course is intended to increase students’ methodological and theoretical skills at the bases of experimental practice. To this end, bases of experimental psychology and neuroimaging techniques (e.g. EEG, MEG, fMRI, PET, fNIRS, TMS) will be provided. Then, students will be asked to read and analyze from a methodological perspectives scientific papers about normal and pathological psychological/neurological functioning (e.g. stroke motor impairments, dyslexia, autism).
