Syllabus

Course Objectives

- basic knowledge of the historical development of the Greek world (from Alexander the Great to the Conquest of Rome), without losing sight of the relationship between the Greeks and other peoples of the Mediterranean world; - understanding of aspects and problems related to Greek history and historiography, classical, Hellenistic, and Hellenistic-Roman; - ability to contextualize phenomena and events within the coordinates of time and space; - acquisition of good critical skills in the reading of ancient texts and documents.

Course Prerequisites

Prerequisites: knowledge of Greek history and historiography from its origins to the death of Alexander the Great.

Teaching Methods

- Lectures (delivered both by professors and teaching assistants) - Problem solving - Analysis and translations of greek sources - Use of Interactive Maps of Ancient Greece - Visits to museums, historic city-centres and archaeological sites

Assessment Methods

Oral examination. During the exam the student must be able to demonstrate - her/his knowledge of the most significant themes and aspects of the ancient Greek history and historiography, explained in a sufficient correct scientific language; - her/his ability to analyze, interpret and comment greek and latin sources and documents.

Program for attending students who have the 12-credit Greek History exam (module A + module B) in their study plan: 1/5. A book of your choice from the following list: - C. Bearzot, Manuale di storia greca, il Mulino, Bologna, 2015 (III ed) - available online Pandora Campus - M. Bettalli (a cura di), Storia greca, Carocci Editore, Roma, 2021 (III ed.) 2/5. Introduzione alla storiografia greca, a cura di M. Bettalli, Carocci, Roma, 2021 (new edition): capp.: 2-11, 13. The study of the indicated chapters must be carried out selectively. Knowledge of the following authors will be required: Hecataeus * - Herodotus * - Thucydides * - Xenophon * - Ephorus - Theopompus - Ctesias - Alessandrography: Ptolemy, Clitarchus, Arrian - Hieronymus - Timaeus - Polybius * - Diodorus - Strabo - Plutarch - Pausanias * . For all the authors cited, a general chronological classification, knowledge of the contents and the main aspects of the method of the work will be required; for major authors (marked with an asterisk) knowledge of the structure and editorial history of the work will also be required. Knowledge of the following topics will also be required: universal historiography, pragmatic historiography, biography, periegesis; the relationship between historiography and epic; the relationship between historiography and rhetoric; the ancient historian and his audience. 3/5. L'età ellenistica. Società, politica, cultura, a cura di M. Mari, Carocci, Roma, 2019: cap. 1 (solo i §§. 1.1 e 1.3); cap. 2 (solo il §. 2.6); capp. 4-6; cap. 7 (solo i §§. 7.3-7.4). The study of the chapters indicated - which integrate the Hellenistic section of the manuals suggested above (see point 1/5 of the program) - must be carried out selectively. Specifically, knowledge of the following topics will be required: the chronological definition of the Hellenistic age; the 'novelty' of the Hellenistic age; the 'vertical' relations between king, court, city (negotiation and language of power); the cult of the Hellenistic ruler; evergetism as an economic and political phenomenon; the court company; court elites and city elites; the Hellenistic kingdom as a network; the 'horizontal' relationships between cities. 4/5. One textbook to be chosen from the following: - C. Bearzot, Manuale di storia greca, Bologna: il Mulino, 2015, 3rd ed. (from the rise of Philip II onwards); - M. Bettalli (ed.), Storia greca, Rome: Carocci, 2021 (from the rise of Philip II onwards). 2. M. Bettalli (ed.), Introduzione alla storiografia greca, Rome: Carocci, 2021 (new edition). In particular, students will be expected to demonstrate knowledge of the following authors: Ephorus – Theopompus – Ctesias – Alexander historians (Ptolemy, Cleitarchus, Arrian) – Hieronymus – Timaeus – Polybius* – Diodorus – Strabo – Plutarch – Pausanias*. For all the authors listed, students will be required to provide a general chronological framework, to show familiarity with the contents of their works, and to illustrate the main methodological features. For the major authors (marked with an asterisk), knowledge of the structure and redactional history of the work will also be required. Furthermore, students will be expected to demonstrate familiarity with the following topics: universal historiography; pragmatic historiography; biography; periegesis; the relationship between historiography and epic; the relationship between historiography and rhetoric; the ancient historian and his audience. 3. M. Mari (ed.), L’età ellenistica. Società, politica, cultura, Rome: Carocci, 2019: Ch. 1 (sections 1.1 and 1.3 only); Ch. 2 (section 2.6 only); Chs. 4–6; Ch. 7 (sections 7.3–7.4 only). The study of the chapters indicated—complementary to the Hellenistic section of the textbooks listed above (see point 1 of the programme)—must be carried out selectively. Specifically, students will be required to address the following topics: chronological definition of the Hellenistic age; the ‘novelty’ of the Hellenistic period; ‘vertical’ relations between king, court, and city (negotiation and the language of power); the cult of the Hellenistic ruler; euergetism as an economic and political phenomenon; court society; court elites and civic elites; the Hellenistic kingdom as a network; ‘horizontal’ relations between cities. 4. Contents

Module B: After general introduction devoted to Alexander the Great and the formation of his myth in ancient and modern times, the course will explore several aspects and issues related to the political, social, and economic history of the Hellenistic world until the Roman Conquest. Emphasis will be put on the method of analysis of different sources (literary, archaeological, epigraphic and numismatic evidences). A part of the course shall be dedicated to the study of the Greek Historiography after the Roman Conquest (ex.gr.: Polybius, Diodorus, Pausanias).
