Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide students with the methodology for contemporary art through a critical reading of the artwork, structurally changed than before, and an analysis of documents. The aim is a more conscious and problematic acquisition of basic knowledge of art history in the nineteenth and twentieth century.

Course Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of art history from Medieval to Modern

Teaching Methods

Lectures
24 hours of lectures, 6 hours to visit museums and exhibitions.

exercises in the form of reading and analysis of some emblematic works from the nineteenth and twentieth century: the exercise, which is part of the course, provides finally, the development by the student, a short essay of analysis work.

Assessment Methods

review and discussion of the oral preparation achieved by the candidate and possibly in the short essay analysis work

- C. Bertelli, G. Briganti, A. Giuliano, Storia dell’arte in Italia, vol. IV, Milano, Electa-Bruno Mondadori
- P. De Vecchi, R. Cerchiari, Arte nel tempo, vol. III e IV, Milano, Bompiani, varie edizioni.
- G. Bora, G. Fiaccadori, A. Negri, A. Nova, I luoghi dell'arte. Storia opere percorsi, voll. V-VI, Electa- Bruno Mondadori, Milano, 2003.

Specific book on methodology:
E. Crispolti, Come studiare l'arte contemporanea, Donzelli, nuova edizione aggiornata, Roma 2005 .

Non-attending students are required to study in detail the texts in the bibliography, instead of the frequency indicates the book:

F. Poli, Arte contemporanea. Le ricerche internazionali dalla fine degli anni 50 a oggi, Electa, 2005.

We encourage students attending and not attending to review the projections Power Point provided by the professor at the art history library.

Contents

The artist and nature: issues and perspectives from the nineteenth to the twentieth century
The examination is a prerequisite for Contemporary Art History- b.
The course is divided into two parts:
1. The methodology of the study of contemporary art
2. The history of Western art from the mid-nineteenth to the entire twentieth century. This will be the theme of the artist's relationship with the natural elements through some emblematic examples from Monet and Van Gogh to Cezanne, from Matisse to Boccioni, from De Chirico to Pollock, from Warhol and Christo, to the poetic and the new avant-garde and conceptual art.
The course must be completed by a student's independent study leading to a full knowledge of the developments of the historical period.
