Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the course, the student will achieve the following outcomes:
1) appropriate knowledge of ancient Greek literary dialects and related modern classifications;
2) ability to appropriate contextualization of ancient Greek literary texts according to their dialectal features and strengthening of personal critical skills
through reading and analysis of texts;
3) ability to make autonomous and conscious judgments on the topics of the course;
4) ability to communicate the course contents to both specialists and non-specialists, by debating issues and proposing arguments and solutions;
5) acquisition of necessary skills for the autonomous deepening of the course topics and the main aspects concerning ancient Greek literary dialects.

Course Prerequisites

A good knowledge of the ancient Greek language is required.

Teaching Methods

In-presence lessons. Commenting on and discussing teaching materials made available online (Kiro). It will be possible to hold seminars on special topics, with the students actively involved. Lively interaction will be favored.

Assessment Methods

The exam will be oral and aims to verify the knowledge of:
 1) topics, texts and bibliography proposed during the lessons; 2) features of the Greek literary dialects, to be prepared on one of the handbooks listed under Readings; 3) reading of the Greek literary text chosen together with the teacher by the end of the course (one of the texts read in class; however, it will be possible to choose a different text from the same author/genre, upon agreement with the teacher).

The teacher will provide the Greek texts to be read in the classroom.

Contents

The mosaic of ancient Greek literary languages will be illustrated on the synchronic and diachronic plane, with special attention to the relationship between literary languages and local dialects, and will be accompanied by the reading of poetry and prose texts of the archaic and classical ages. The focus will be on the following texts: 1) Alcm. fr. 1 Davies 2) Simon. fr. 543 Page 3) Pind. Ol. 7.1–12 Snell-Maehler 4) Sapph. fr. 1 Neri 5) Archil. fr. 13 West 6) Hdt. 3.12 Wilson The exam program includes three points: 1) topics, texts and bibliography proposed during the lessons; 2) features of the Greek literary dialects, to be prepared on one of the handbooks listed under Readings; 3) reading of a Greek literary text to be chosen together with the teacher by the end of the course.
