Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to highlight the main historical, theoretical and methodological aspects related to conservation and restoration. In this way, the student will be able to learn the evolution of the concepts of heritage protection and conservation, learn about the main events of the history and theories of restoration and understand a restoration intervention from a critical and methodological point of view, through a correct interdisciplinary approach.

Course Prerequisites

Knowledge of the fundamental aspects of art history from the medieval to the contemporary age.

Teaching Methods

The course includes lectures, accompanied by power point presentations. The learning of the contents by the students will be verified in progress through the discussion on some case studies. Students who are authorized to benefit from inclusive/innovative teaching must contact the teacher to arrange specific meetings dedicated to them.

Assessment Methods

Oral exam aimed at evaluate knowledge of the topics covered during the course and the ability to critically evaluate a restoration intervention.

Contents

The course aims to offer an overview of the theories and history of restoration, from the Renaissance to the twentieth century. The lessons will focus on the fundamental stages of the history of restoration, following the evolution of the concepts of protection and conservation of cultural heritage and deepening the development of theories on restoration and intervention methodologies for the conservation of artworks.
