The course provides knowledge of the history of Greek writing from its origins to the humanistic age, linking the evolution of graphic forms to the broader history of written culture in society, as well as the ability to read and critically evaluate Greek writing in its various stages and types.
Course Prerequisites
An elementary knowledge of the Greek language is helpful. Knowledge of the material structure of the manuscript, provided by the "Archaeology of the manuscript book" course, may also be helpful.
Teaching Methods
The course will be divided into theoretical lessons, during which will be illustrated the evolution of Greek writing and practical lessons that, with the help of facsimiles, will provide students with the tools necessary to read the writing and to date and locate it correctly.
Assessment Methods
Oral examination in which the student must demonstrate the ability to read the Greek writings. Students should also be able to recognize any canonized or typed writings developed between the fourth and fifteenth centuries and consequently to date and locate it.
