Syllabus

Course Objectives

D1. Knowledge and understanding. By the end of the course, students will gain knowledge on the academic discipline of Translation Studies, and will learn about its key theoretical paradigms as well as the history and theory of translation.

D2. Applying knowledge and understanding. By the end of the course, students will be able to identify and assess autonomously the linguistic and stylistic choices, as well as the translational approaches and strategies, used in translated texts. Students will also be able to critically analyse current issues being debated within the discipline.

D3. Making judgments. By the end of the course, students will become skilled readers who can articulate their own opinions and questions on translated texts in an informed manner.

D4. Communication skills. By the end of the course, students will develop the skills and the meta-linguistic competence to critically analyse current issues being debated within the discipline. The written exam will put students in the condition of being able to organize their knowledge in a logical and structured way.

D5. Learning skills. By the end of the course, students will have developed critical thinking abilities which are essential to understanding the role of the translator.

Teaching Methods

Lectures, possible guest lecturers. Lectures will be in Italian; examples will cover several languages.

Assessment Methods

60-minute Moodle quiz (50 items) on topics covered in class and on the course readings. Positive marks: > 18/30. Students who attend the course will be able to hand in a team project work.

Contents

This course will provide the ideal foundation if you want to gain knowledge on the academic discipline of Translation Studies. The course will equip you with theoretical paradigms relevant to investigations of translation contexts, processes, products and producers. You will study in-depth the history and theory of translation and develop the skills and the meta-linguistic competence to critically analyse current issues being debated within the discipline. Audiovisual translation theories will be covered, too.

The course is valid only for this academic year. Students are therefore required to pass the examination by the Extraordinary Session. If the student does not get the credits within the deadlines, s/he will have to undergo the examination according to the following year's programme. The results are recorded on-line and can be easily checked by students on their personal account.
