Syllabus

Course Objectives

Getting acquainted with key methods and approaches in Translation Studies and developing translation skills; Getting acquainted with the metalanguage of Translation Studies; Using translation as a means of consolidating language competence; Learning how to use standard strategies, procedures and techniques of translation in the English-Italian language pair; Identifying the argumentative structure, communicative purpose, and dominant element(s) of a source text; Learning how to reformulate texts without fundamentally altering their meaning; Acquiring the critical-thinking skills to argue the language choices made during the translation process and when comparing original and translated texts; Acquiring autonomy in lexicographic searches, text analysis, and translation.

Course Prerequisites

Students should have at least a B2+/C1 level in English and a C1-C2 level in Italian in order to be able to follow the course successfully.
Eligible course participants must be specialising in English with minimum three years of English linguistics in the undergraduate degree course, and be enrolled in either one of the two Master’s degrees in Linguistics or Languages and Literatures for Intercultural Studies.

Teaching Methods

Lectures, hands-on sessions, students’ presentations, class discussion, team-work (possible guest talks). Extra classes and workshops in Academic Communication/Writing Skills and Translation Techniques are scheduled throughout the semester, starting in November. Specialised workshops (TUTORATO) run by students will also be available. Attendance is strongly recommended to *all* classes available.

Assessment Methods

Students will be assessed through a written translation into English of texts (150-200 words) similar to those discussed and translated in class. Students will also be asked to write a comment in English on the source text analysis, the translation approach and strategies used.

Contents

The module is intended to introduce students to the main concepts and approaches in Translation Studies, and to the main strategies that can be adopted when translating from one language/culture to another, with reference to the English-Italian language pair. The process, the product, and the theory of translation will be the focus of the course, and a means to develop and consolidate language competence and text related critical thinking. Translation work by students will be preceded by a thorough analysis of the source texts, and it will be carried out in class and at home. Students will be expected to do their homework and discuss collectively during class meetings.
