The course aims at an advanced philological study of medieval Germanic texts. The student will acquire the advanced knowledge necessary to master the methodological tools that allow for a critical analysis of the text.
Course Prerequisites
Students should have acquired 9-12 CFU in Germanic Philology
Teaching Methods
lectures in which the issue of textual criticism will be outlined, and Germanic medieval texts wil be read, translated and analyzed using a philological approach.
Assessment Methods
Students will write a paper on a subject agreed upon with the teacher. The oral testing will focus on the contents of the course and the discussion of the paper.

Contents
The first part of the course will concern the theme of textual criticism. The course will then focus on 'Sacred and Profane Love in the Germanic Middle Ages'. Texts such as the Gothic Bible, the Old English 'Beowulf' and 'Old English Elegies', Old Norse 'Tristrams saga' and 'Saga af Tristram' will be read, translated and analyzed philologically.
