Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide solid knowledge of the structural, lexical, rhetorical, and other specific features of the German language in its various communicative uses, supported by corpus linguistics from multiple perspectives and with diverse applications. Some sessions will be devoted to a critical reflection on the linguistic and contrastive aspects of translation.
With regard to language skills, the course activities and the accompanying supplementary instruction aim to strengthen students’ competences at the C1/C2 level, with particular attention to academic writing and translation skills.

Course Prerequisites

The course presupposes a basic (three-year) study path in German Language that has provided solid knowledge of German linguistics and an advanced active and passive command of the German language (C1).

Teaching Methods

The course will have a predominantly seminar-based structure throughout, requiring the active participation of students, who will be asked to further explore, develop, and discuss the materials presented through both individual and group work. In addition to plenary presentations (Referate) (A), students will also be required to write a short paper (B). The complete bibliography and additional supplementary materials will be presented and discussed during the course.
Non-attending students
Students who are unable to attend are asked to contact the instructor in order to agree on supplementary readings and alternative individual assignments (short papers).

Contents

The course consists of two parts (in sequence): Corpus Linguistics (A) and Discourse Analysis (B).
In A, corpus linguistics will be addressed from a theoretical perspective and also its applications for multimedia and specialized translation. The description will be complemented by contrastive reflections and practical applications.
In B, linguistic discourse analysis will be explored in depth from a theoretical perspective. In particular, its relationship with political linguistics and corpus linguistics will be examined.
The description will be complemented by contrastive reflections and practical applications, including the use of corpora and databases. The focus will be specifically on discourses surrounding tourism, politics (migration, elections, war, pandemics etc.).
The course is accompanied by supplementary teaching provided by native-speaking German Collaboratori ed Esperti Linguistici (CEL). The supplementary instruction runs throughout the academic year and aims to strengthen students’ practical competence in the use of the German language.
