Course Objectives
Specialized translation: First and foremost, the course aims to illustrate to students the main strategies and tools commonly used in the practice of translation in the publishing field, while allowing them to develop their own awareness of translation. Starting with a targeted analysis of the linguistic, sociocultural, and stylistic aspects of non-literary texts aimed at identifying their argumentative structure and main communicative purposes, students will be able to: tackle the challenges encountered in the professional field related to the translation of different types of texts with critical autonomy and methodological skills; reformulate (where necessary) the target text without altering the meaning of the source text; collaborate with other translators in the case of multi-author translations; acquire autonomy in general and sector-specific lexicographical research.

Multimedia translation: secondly, in light of the number of hours allocated to the course (which covers both specialized and multimedia translation), the aim is to introduce students to the main theoretical aspects of multimedia translation in its various forms, in order to make them aware of the many skills that this type of translation requires. The aim of the course will also be to provide students with the tools (also in relation to the facilities that the University can make available to them) and methodologies necessary to tackle a type of multimedia translation, so that they can develop not only a sensitivity to the inevitable linguistic specificities, but also to the semiotic and cultural implications of the source text.

Course Prerequisites
Excellent knowledge of French and Italian, both written and spoken, including a good understanding of different linguistic registers and variations in French usage at an international level.
Teaching Methods
Lectures, exercises, group work, classroom discussions, viewing audio and video content aimed at illustrating software, dictionaries, and glossaries useful for translation practice.
Assessment Methods
The learning assessment will consist of the translation of two non-literary texts (of medium length) from French into Italian, followed, in the event of a positive outcome, by a discussion and commentary in French on the choices and approach adopted during the translation work. For the multimedia translation assessment, students may be asked to subtitle a short video based on the exercises carried out in class, assigned to groups and followed by a discussion and commentary on the choices made.

Contents
The program will be divided into two parts:
a) In the first part, after an overview of the most salient aspects of specialized translation (definitions, techniques, strategies, tools, use of software), the course will include a series of exercises aimed at raising awareness of the analysis and translation of texts of various types (essays, articles, chapters from manuals, popular science texts, tourist guides, board games, etc.). The exercises will take place throughout the course, both individually and collectively, in order to guide students in teamwork and to help them make and justify their translation choices in a detailed manner.
b) The second part of the course will begin with a brief overview of some of the different aspects of multimedia translation and its many applications (films, TV series, documentaries, videos, and interviews). This will be followed by a presentation of the main tools commonly used in multimedia translation (software, subtitle generators, machine translators, possible contribution of AI) and a series of classroom exercises that may include: comparative analysis of translations produced using artificial intelligence and by professional translators; the practice of translation for the subtitling of video content (highlighting its peculiarities, but also its constraints and main difficulties); the development of sensitivity regarding the rendering in Italian of the main linguistic and sociolinguistic implications present in the French language and culture and, to a lesser extent, in French-speaking countries (humor, puns, argot, accent, regional and international linguistic varieties and their sociocultural implications in communication).
